HYGIENIC XXXIII APPROACHS! GET YOUR ART ON! ENGAGE YOUR COMMUNITY! OCCUPY HYGIENIC!
SALON DES INDEPENDANTS
January 28, 2012 8:00PM
CALLING ALL ARTISTS! OCCUPY HYGIENIC!
Visual artists are invited to submit work to the 33rd Salon des Indépendants to be held at the Hygienic Art Galleries in downtown New London, Connecticut. Hanging begins at 8am on Saturday, January 28 and runs to 6pm. The show officially opens at 8pm that night and runs through February 11. The rules are simple: one piece per artist, no judge, no jury, no fees, and no censorship!
The Salon des Indépendants movement was created by French Impressionists who were not accepted into the established Salon of the late 19th Century. To protest the rigid arts establishment, these artists exhibited their works in cafés in the seamy sections of Paris. This revolutionary movement included notable characters such as Van Gogh, Matisse, Munch, Rousseau, Cézanne, and Modigliani among others. The intent of the artists was to create an artistic event without jury or reward so that all forms of expression and trends in the art of the moment would have a chance to be presented to the public for their consideration.
Over its 30 year history, the annual art extravaganza has grown from an anti-establishment visual art show to an anti-establishment multi-media art event including film, video, performance art, and fashion as well as a young artists’ show and musical events. Admission to all events is free or by donation. Call (860) 444-6855 for more info.

Thoughts regarding the 'Copper Woman Series'
They represents many layers, many faces of my being. Acknowledging my multicultural heritage
I felt the rumblings and rhythm of my ancestors speaking to me. Their social and spiritual power as
women inspired me to weave my story with theirs.
As a sacred narrative, the images you see are symbols, clues, personal myths, a contemplative mirror of sorts.
My process, I begin by rapid mark making, drawing nothing particular but layers upon layers of lines to unlock and unearth the imagery.
Once a shape appears, I follow the line into form and allow my inner voice to dictate the story.
The marriage of medium, in this case Caron d'Ache a watercolor crayon stick called
Neocolor ll Aquarelle Artists Crayons and rough surface watercolor paper allows the imagery to have texture and reflect light.
Sierra #1 Maelstrom #2 The Moon & The Nightingale #3

Brazen #4 Fusion #5 Nimbus #6
created using Neocolor II Aquarelle Artists' Crayons
Their excellent lightfastness, their high pigment concentration,
and their adaptability to several techniques have helped to put them in a class of their own.
